Angkor temples with picnic lunch

You'll meet your guide this morning and set off for Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring the most extraordinary towers and bas-reliefs and a highlight of any trip to Cambodia. This is one of the most astonishing monuments ever conceived by mankind, and was erected in the 12th century in honor of Vishnu. After you've explored Angkor Wat pay a visit to the ancient Ta Prohm monastery where immense branches have taken root in the stones. Beyond the impressive vegetation you will find some splendid sculptured Devatas. From the temple, travel by private vehicle (or possibly on a cow cart) to a remote, untouched temple where your private picnic lunch will be set up and waiting. Here you can relax under the trees with a soothing foot massage before starting your afternoon temple exploration. You'll visit the Great City of Angkor Thom beginning at the south gate and the famous Bayon temple. Dedicated to Buddhism, Bayon consists of 54 gigantic towers featuring 216 smiling faces of Avalokitesvara. Then, cross to the Elephant Terrace which, at 350m long, was used as a giant viewing stand for public ceremonies. Next, move to the raised terrace of the Leper King, which bears many beautifully sculptured Apsara statues. After spending the whole day among the temples, head back to your hotel in the city.

Phnom Penh sightseeing

Today you will take a city tour of Phnom Penh, starting with a visit to the Royal Palace built in 1866 by King Norodom and comprising different structures grouped together in one enclosure. These house a remarkable collection of Khmer art. Here you’ll find the Silver Pagoda whose key works include a golden Buddha encrusted with 9584 diamonds and weighing 90kgs, and a Buddha featuring emeralds and Baccarat crystal dating from the 17th century. Next, you'll visit Toul Sleng, an ancient school which was used as a prison under the Khmers Rouges time. Its a sobering visit but an important part of Cambodia's history. This afternoon, enjoy some free time at your leisure.

You'll have two full days to explore your surroundings in Koh Kong. Relax and take it easy as you watch the river life go by by from the deck of your private floating tent. Or, if you're up for something more active, there are no shortage of excursions on offer to explore the rich, natural beauty of the Tatai River. You could head to the beautiful waterfall by boat, take a kayaking adventure along the river or venture in to the unique mangroves to meet the fishing families of the local Koh Kong villages. As the sun sets, you'll be treated to a menu of traditional Khmer cuisine at the floating 4 Rivers Restaurant. Similar to Thai but with its own distinctive flavor thanks to the ancient Khmer locals who have mastered the blending of herbs and spices in their meals.
