This morning, after breakfast, you will participate in a fun treasure hunt which is designed to help you explore the Old Quarter of Hanoi to look for different objects at different places such as markets, temples and typical old houses. In the afternoon continue to explore Hanoi with its famous Temple of Literature also known as the “First University of Vietnam”. After that, take a ride in a traditional cyclo for a tour of the city’s traditional 36 streets in the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake vicinity with ancient Ngoc Son Temple. End your day of Hanoi experiences with a traditional water puppet show.

After breakfast continue your exploration of Hanoi with with a visit to the famous Ethnology Museum (closed on Monday) where you can learn about the culture and customs of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. See a Vietnamese To He or toy figurine, a traditional Vietnamese toy that local children are exceedingly fond of. To He is made of glutinous rice powder in the form of edible figurines such as animals, flowers or characters in folk stories. The craft was fashioned to entertain children during festivals, a form of comic book, where the craftsman travelled with his trade from to skillfully bring to life colourful characters of ancient folklore. While much has changed over time, the joy and excitement for a child still remains unchanged. This afternoon is free of planned activities, continue exploring on your own or relax at your hotel.

This morning, leave Hanoi and head straight to Hai Phong (2 hour drive) where you will boat your boat to cruise through Halong Bay - a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site with its 3,000 islands of towering limestone dotting the bay and Gulf of Tonkin to the quiet paradise of Ba Trai Dao beach, an area of Lan Ha Bay. Unlike the main Ha Long Bay, the islands of Lan Ha Bay are forested, and most are small in stature. Lunch and dinner are served on boat.

Wake early for a Tai Chi class on the sundeck, followed by breakfast. If the weather permits, enjoy swimming in Halong Bay before returning to Halong harbour for your transfer to Hanoi Airport and your onward flight to Hue where you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the city.

After breakfast you'll meet your guide for a day of sightseeing. Your first stop will be the Thien Mu pagoda before taking a boat to the Tien Non pier, where your bikes will be awaiting. From there enjoy a bike ride to the village of Sinh. The ride is easy and the two villages are only a few kilometres apart on flat ground. You'll pass traditional landscapes along the route with a few surprising additions including French cows and churches. This bike ride will be an opportunity to discover the charms of the Hue countryside, its ancient villages, its pagodas and churches as well as its rivers covered with lotus flowers. In the afternoon, visit the Imperial Palace (the Citadel), located right on the banks of the Perfume River. Later today, you will be introduced to Hue’s kite history learning about the tools and materials used to make kites. The master will demonstrate all the steps to make your very own kite and instruct you carefully from the beginning to end. One of the most interesting steps is drawing a design on your kite. It's the perfect time to let your imagination fly! At the end of the lesson, you will be presented with your own handmade kite and have the opportunity to fly your kite with some local kite flyers.

Before leaving Hue this morning, visit the Tomb of Minh Mang. Next up, you'll board the train to Danang via the scenic Hai Van Pass to view one of the most beautiful panoramas in Vietnam. The standard on train is very basic, however this is a perfect chance to mingle with the local while admiring the best part of our beautiful coastline. Arrive in Danang in the afternoon where you'll be met and transfer by private car to your Hoi An hotel on the beach. The remainder of the day is free to relax at your resort.

After breakfast, set off on your discovery tour of Hoi An. Head to Cua Dai Pier for a boat ride to the mouth of Thu Bon river and enjoy the daily activities of the fishermen throwing fishing net and trading their catch. On arrival at a small village, swap to small bamboo boat (a coracle) to discover a distinctive mangrove forest where you can admire the skillful fishermen who are working there. Back to the main land by mid-morning you'll head into the Old Town of Hoi An for a stroll through small streets of the town to explore two-century-old Chinese houses. You will also visit sites include the Japanese Bridge, the Chinese Temple, and Tan Ky trading house. In the afternoon, join a workshop making lanterns. Here, you will have the chance to discover this traditional handicraft and create one yourself. The rest of day is at your own leisure to enjoy the beach or Hoi An Old Town.

Hoi An Buffalo Farm

After breakfast this morning you'll transfer to the buffalo cart station for a relaxing ride on a buffalo cart through the countryside to a local farm. Once at the farm you'll join the local farmers to work on the field: ploughing/raking soil, transplanting rice, scooping water with different scoopers. This is a peaceful setting where you will be able to observe and take part in the various stages of rice processing: husking the paddy grains, pounding and bleaching. Try out different tools and artisanal machines under the watchful eyes of your teachers for the day. After a busy morning enjoy lunch of local specialities: Tam Huu (small skewers of pork and prawns), rice pancakes, spring rolls, soups and caramel pork. It's back to Hoi An town in the early afternoon.

This morning you will be transferred to the airport in Danang for a short flight to Ho Chi Minh City. From the airport you will transfer to the city where you will start your exploration of this dynamic metropolis. Today you will visit the historic sites of the city including the Old Post Office of Saigon, the Notre Dame cathedral, Dong Khoi Street and the Chinese District of Cho Lon with bustling Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Pagoda. Back to your hotel later this afternoon.

Day 10: Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City

This morning you'll transferred to Cai Lay where the days activity starts with beautiful landscapes of lush rice paddies and fruit farms emerging alongside the highway. Upon arrival, board a charming wooden boat and enjoy the countryside scenery and river life. Off the boat and hop on a bicycle for a short ride of about 7km (over easy, level terrain) along narrow village lanes, past fruit orchards and local cottage industries - you can take a Xe loi a kind of rickshaw if you are not up for cycling. Arriving at the home of a tropical fruit farmer you'll tour the orchard with the opportunity to sample some of the fresh fruits. Then relax while enjoying the view from a small sampan boat as you are paddled slowly along tropical canals before transferring back to Ho Chi Minh City.
