Start your active holiday to Costa Rica in San Jose with a full days white water rafting on one of the best rafting rivers in the country. After this, continue to Arenal; home to a picture perfect volcano and natural hot springs. In Arenal enjoy a breath taking zip wire tour along with a full day visit to the largest private reserve in Costa Rica giving you the chance to see some of the country's incredible flora and fauna. Next up is the remote and unique Rio Perdido hotel which offers a range of adventure activities and relaxation. You finish up your trip with a few days relaxing on the stunning Pacific coast beaches close to the town of Tamarindo.

Day 2 - White Water Rafting

San Jose - Full Day White Water Rafting

After an early morning pickup from the San Jose hotel, you will drive by comfortable bus to the operations centre for a delicious, typical Costa Rican breakfast. After changing into your rafting gear, you will drive to the rafting put-in on the banks of the Pacuare River where a guide will give the necessary instruction on paddling and how to enjoy a safe adventure. Your hearts will pound as the raft careens into the heart of one of Costa Rica's most impressive primary rainforests. You will traverse through densely vegetated rainforest gorges, observe beautiful waterfalls, relax in serene pools and experience pounding rapids. You will enjoy an adrenaline-packed afternoon running the Pacuare's challenging rapids, with names like ‘Upper and Lower Huacas, Cimarron, Dos Montañas’ and more. At the take-out, a short drive brings everyone back to the operations centre where a hearty and delicious lunch will be ready.

Take a shared transfer from San Jose to Arenal with the remainder of the day at leisure. 

One of Costa Rica's most popular destinations and with good reason, Arenal has something to offer everybody. The region has plenty of adventure activities on offer and at the end of the day you can soak up the views in your hotel's natural hot springs.

Arenal - Canopy Tour

Today is a fun excursion high up in the canopy of the rainforest with the added bonus of amazing views of the Arenal volcano and lake. The tour starts from the reception of the main building from where you take a tram for about 20 minutes to reach an observation platform, with the possibility of making intermediate stops. It is a guided tour and it includes a 25 minute walk in the rainforest. To descend from the platform, you take a series of zip wires for an exhilarating ride through the canopy.

Day 5 - Children’s Eternal Rainforest

Arenal - Children’s Eternal Rainforest Excursion

The Children’s Eternal Rainforest Reserve is a research centre which is administered by the Monteverde Conservationist Association, and holds 22,000 hectares of protected forest. It is also one of the most important and oldest reserves of Central America, and the largest private reserve in Costa Rica.

After a one hour ride in a four wheel drive truck through mountain paths, we will get to the Pocosol Station, a scientific centre created for the research of flora and fauna and which is located alongside a lagoon of volcanic origin at 1100 meters above sea level. The purpose of visiting the area is to hike through a 4 hour long trail, admiring the primary forest, the volcanic soil with its fumaroles, the Pocosol Waterfall with a height over 50 meters, the observation deck which allows us to watch its fall into a river canyon, as well as the incredible flora and fauna including a large variety of animals, like wild boars, coatis, agoutis, howler monkeys, and many types of birds.

Day 5 - Children’s Eternal Rainforest

This morning, take a private transfer from Arenal to Rio Perdido. 

To arrive to Río Perdido Hotel, take a meandering country road, surrounded by a volcanic mountain range and a dwarf forest, a rare habitat within the Costa Rican tropical dry forest. The hotel sits between two deep canyons: one is a completely vertical gorge carrying cool waters with a peculiar white tint and the other is the thermo-mineral Rio Perdido. Guests will have the opportunity to soak in one of the dozens natural thermal pools along the Perdido River, enjoy a volcanic mud treatment or the swim-up bar or embark on a true adventure on a variety of adrenaline-fueled activities.

While Costa Rica has dozens of “canopy tours,” with hundreds of zip-lines, Rio Perido has truly innovated with their Canyon Adventure. Under the guidance of renowned adventure designers, they have created a sequence that will delight and surprise. Their inspiring Rio Blanco Canyon is the main stage for the awesome cable-based adventure, which includes: - 15 platforms: 6 of them are rock-based, 9 are suspended on the canyon walls; a pendulum cable, a 50ft “Tarzan swing”, a 90ft challenge bridge, 4 'via ferratas' (climbing paths) with lengths varying from 15 to over 30ft, 5 zip lines with lengths varying from 260 to over 800ft and finally a water station in the middle of the circuit!  After today, you deserve a well-deserved rest in the evening!

Tamarindo is a laid back beach town in the north west of the country on the Pacific Coast. This part of Costa Rica has seemingly endless miles of beaches and is also a world renowned surfing destination. There is still plenty of wildlife to be seen and you can take a guided tour of the nearby mangrove swamps on one of your free days.
