Journey through mountains, across lakes and up close to glaciers on this 10-day Argentinian adventure

Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Calafate... Argentina's Lakes District is considered one of the most beautiful places on the planet where volcanic mountains cast shadows on spectacular crystalline lakes and local guanacos and llamas mosey along in relative tranquility. This three centre, 10 day itinerary explores the depths of this wonderfully picturesque region complete with lake crossings, glacier explorations and strolling the classic streets of Buenos Aires.

Itinerary

Day 1: Buenos Aires

Arrive into Buenos Aires airport and be met by your local representative and transferred to your chosen hotel. You will have the rest of the day at your leisure to explore the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, set against the beauty of the River Plate. Wander through its vibrant streets and sample the delights of the local cafés and tango bars.

Day 2: City tour and Tango show

Half day city tour. Dinner and Tango show

After breakfast, you will meet your guide for a fascinating walking tour of the elegant turn-of-the-century districts that gave Buenos Aires the reputation of the Paris of South America. From the charming cobbled alleys and colonial architecture of San Telmo to the Colourful Boca district, along to the Plaza de Mayo, and towards the imposing grandeur of the Palace of Congress and then on to finish at the Recoleta Cemetery. In the evening you will be taken to a superb restaurant to enjoy a typical Argentine dinner, before settling down for a tango show, including songs, music and dances performed by skilled musicians and dancers.

Day 3: Free day to explore Buenos Aires

Enjoy a full day at leisure exploring the wonderful streets and amazing shopping in Buenos Aires, or alternatively you can book one of the day tours available in this exciting city. Perhaps enjoy a day on the Tigre and River Plate, where you can see the city from the river, with its mixture of imposing grand houses nestled among traditional Argentine wooden houses. Or visit El Rosario de Areca, a traditional gaucho ranch on the edge of the city where you can put your own equestrian skills to the test.

Day 4: Argentinian Lake District

Andean Lakes and Peaks

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Buenos Aires airport where you will fly to Bariloche, set in the beauty of the mountains, with deep blue lakes, beautiful forests, and amazing wildlife. You will be transferred to your Bariloche hotel in time to freshen up for your Bariloche afternoon sightseeing tour. The afternoon tour will take you on gentle winding roads along the shores of the Nahuel Huapi Lake with spectacular views of the Andean mountain range in the distance and the ever-changing colours of the lake in the foreground. At Campanario Bay and Peak you can take a chairlift to marvel at one of the most impressive views of the lakes and imposing Andean Peaks.

Day 5:Explore Bariloche on your own

Day at leisure

Either enjoy a full day at leisure, or take the suggested optional tour of Isla Victoria. The tour begins at Pañuelo Port, on the shores of the picturesque Llao Llao Peninsula across the blue waters of Lake Nahuel Huapi. A 30 minute voyage through green forests, with the beauty of snow-capped peaks in the distance leads to Puerto Anchorena on Victoria Island. On the island you can explore its natural beauty and its exotic wildlife. For a fascinating insight into the islands ancient history, you can also visit the set of cave paintings of Tehuelche origin near Playa del Toro.

Day 6: Flight to the glacier region of El Calafate

In the morning you will be met and transferred to Bariloche airport in time for your flight up to El Calafate, to visit its glaciers and icy lakes. Upon arrival into El Calafate, you will be transferred to your hotel to relax for the remainder of the afternoon. Alternatively take an optional half day tour to visit the sights where Tehuelche people left their mark. Visitors can appreciate the Walachia caves, just 8km from the town in a four-wheel drive or on horseback, you can see cave paintings which are some 3000 years old.

Day 6: Flight to the glacier region of El Calafate

Day 7: Perito Moreno Glacier

Perito Moreno Glacier tour

Today's highlight is a full day tour to the stunning Perito Moreno Glacier. You will enjoy a beautiful drive through the National Park, seeing the impressive panoramas, including the Corner of Sighs, where you get your first full view of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Either enjoy the views on your own, or take part in an optional mini trekking extension. The mini trek - one of the most interesting and adventurous ways of getting to know the Argentine glaciers - takes two hours and you will experience the beauty of the glacier and its stunning features first hand. This trek is of a moderate walk and with special trekking shoes with spikes, provided by tour guides. At the end of the walk, trekkers return to the shelter through the exuberant Magellan woods.

Day 8: Day at leisure

Day at leisure

Enjoy a day at leisure, or take part in one of the optional excursions. Either, enjoy a tour of the Upsala Glacier, where you can explore the glacier and the lake by boat, gliding across the ‘Iceberg Channel’ (Canal de los Témpanos) past large wind-sculpted icebergs with smooth and glowing surfaces glittering blue as light refracts shines on the ice. Or visit Estancia Cristina a working farm, situated at the foot of the majestic Cerro Norte, in the valley of the Caterina river, one of Patagonia’s most fascinating yet less known valleys.

Day 9: Flight to Buenos Aires

Flight from El Calafate to Buenos Aires

In the morning you will be transferred back to El Calafate airport and head for Buenos Aires for one night in the capital, where you can enjoy exploring the city again and its exciting nightlife.

Day 10: Homeward bound

Flight back to the UK

Take the transfer to the airport in time for flight back to the UK. Why not extend your stay and visit the thunderous Iguazu Falls?
