This eight day tour offers the chance to experience all of the iconic sights of Sri Lanka. See the oldest tree on earth at Anuradhapura, admire the incredible constructive engineering of Sigiriya Rock Fortress and visit the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa. Other highlights include a visit to Millenium Elephant Foundation in Pinnawala and experiencing a traditional Kandyan dance in the capital.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Sri Lanka

Colombo - Sigiriya / Habarana

After landing into Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital, you'll be greeted at the airport and driven to Sigiriya / Habarana by your English speaking chauffeur. Check-in and then spend the rest of the day however you like!

Day 2: Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura - Sigiriya / Habarana

Depart for Anuradhapura for a city tour of the ancient ruins and Sri Maha Bodhi, said to be the oldest tree on earth. Other sites in the city include the Ruwanveli Seya Dagoba with its famous elephant wall from the 2nd century and the Thuparama Dagoba from the 3rd century.

Day 3: Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Polonnaruwa.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Polonnaruwa - Sigiriya / Habarana

Take your packed breakfast and hike to the top of Sigiriya Rock Fortress soaring 200 metre. This ancient fortress dates back to the 5th century and today is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the afternoon, visit the Walled City of Polonnaruwa, the second most ancient kingdom in Sri Lanka and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the ruins monasteries, temples, bathing pools and Buddhist statues.

Day 3: Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Polonnaruwa.

Day 4: Dambulla Cave Temple & Spice Gardens

Dambulla Cave Temple - Spice Gardens - Kandy

Enjoy a morning visit to the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, filled with an astonishing 150 statues depicting Buddha as well as multiple cave paintings, this is an excellent opportunity to view the evolution of ancient Sri Lankan art. After you've finished exploring the five caves, carry on to the Matale Spice Gardens before arriving in Kandy where you'll spend the night.

Millenium Elephant Foundation - Kandy

Visit Millenium Elephant Foundation, the best place in Sri Lanka for an up close and personal experience with the world’s largest land mammals where you'll have the chance to see these gentle giants splash about in the river during their daily bath. In the afternoon return to the hill city of Kandy to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa - an important shrine for Buddhists and one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka. End your day with a Kandyan Dance Cultural Show filled with acrobatics, costumes and music.

Day 5: Millenium Elephant Foundation & Kandy

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya

Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

Be driven through stunning velvet green landscapes by your chauffeur to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's premier hill resort and the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country. There's also a distinct English vibe here thanks to the number of English country style homes and flower gardens. You'll of course be given a chance to explore the area on a tour of a local plantation and tea factory.

Day 7: Yala National Park

Nuwara Eliya - Yala National Park

Depart early for a trip into Yala National Park, spread over an impressive 97,800 hectares. Upon arrival head off on a jeep safari into the park itself - the second largest national park in Sri Lanka - which is home to an abundance of wildlife including elephants, crocodiles and one of the largest leopard populations in the world.

Day 8: Depart Sri Lanka

After spending the night in Yala National Park you'll be returned to the capital Colombo in time for your flight, whether that's back to the UK or heading on to another destination!
