There are lakes flanked by mountains and then there is Kandalama Lake, home to the Amaya Hotel. The backdrop includes a World Heritage site amongst dramatic peaks and valleys, while the waters can be your home for dining and adventure. Or, simply gaze at the lake from the luxury of the hotel - after all, the water is only a few metres away.

At Amaya Lake Hotel the real star is the majestic Kandalama Lake. This is a wondrous stretch of water, flanked by mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore by barge and boat, or alongside with wide paths perfect for walks and bike rides. Less sedate biking will take you through lush vegetation, up into the hills for stunning views, all the time accompanied by truly abundant flora and fauna. From the luxury of your room, or perhaps after enjoying a swim in the pool or a spa treatment, it is only a matter of a few metres to be at the lake side. Here you can enjoy a barbecue experience, or even float off for dining on the lake itself. Or simply relax and enjoy the views and gentle breeze.

About Amaya Lake

Simply describing the setting of Amaya Lake Hotel as being lakeside with a backdrop of mountains does not do it justice. Here you have the backdrop of UNESCO World Heritage site Sigiriya, an ancient rock fortress that stands proudly out from the lake. The lake itself is lined with lush vegetation, easily accessible by wide paths suitable for foot and bike. All around these paths is a cornucopia of endemic flora and fauna - a twitcher’s delight. Heading out on to the lake should almost be mandatory, barge boat rides along the glistening waters can be organised by the hotel’s friendly staff. Land lovers might prefer to take mountain bikes out, the cooling breeze of the lake ensures a pleasant trip and the awe inspiring Dambulla Cave Temple is a popular destination. You will also want to spend time around the hotel itself, probably a good amount of time, whether this is simply strolling in the grounds and down to the lake, or enjoying the luxury on offer. There is an outdoor pool in which to unwind, and a spa offering cleansing local treatments. Suites and villas are reminiscent of earlier eras, but adorned with modern conveniences - perfect for sending messages home to jealous friends and family. And you will also want to share the dining experiences, whether it’s the lake-side barbecue or eating while cruising on the lake. But it might only be photos of the food you share, it’s too good to give away.
